Blackberry: is one of the most prolific and easily cultivated fruit bushes due to its ability to transform the sprig that touches the ground into a root and a new plant. That’s why berry fields are so vast and difficult to walk through. To avoid its rambling in random directions, we should make sure it creeps up a fence or a wall. There are many varieties of blackberry – cultivated and wild. When looking for a bush to be planted in a garden, it’s better to choose a variety without thorns. However, it’s a good idea to collect some in the forest as those varieties are considered more flavourous. The fruit is the source of vitamin C, flavonoids, fibre and folic acid. It is also a medicinal plant. Compresses made from leaves decoction heal skin diseases; brews are used as diaphoretic; and root decoction has diuretic effect. Blackberries are not recommended to people allergic to aspirin as they contain salicin – a substance similar to those contained in aspirin. According to ancient English beliefs, the fruit shouldn’t be picked after 10 of October as later it is supposed to be spat on by the devil.
